Where is Starman and Falcon Heavy now ?

It was hard to find where Starman was so here is the best link I have found so far - this is a simulations and is not live, as there is no power left onboard, all the batteries have been used and there is no Solar Panels. So it is not easy to actively track it - hence the simulation.
It also gives me an insight into what is happening on Australian students minds.

Many of these students are lonely especially those having mainly online courses. I saw a recent poll where 1 in 3 students said that they didn't have a single friend from University, I always take these anonymous polls with a grain of salt, but it gives an indication, there are many students with no one to reach out to.

I had the opposite experience at university. I met my first person at university within a few minutes of arriving. I was looking around for the administration office of my residential college with a pile of luggage. This guy called to me and said "are you looking for the office? "

I said "yep". We introduced ourselves to each other and he invited me out for a beer that night and explained to me how lunch worked so that once I got my key I knew where to go. We went out and had a few beers that night, my first night out as a uni student.

I signed in to college, got given my key, dropped my bag in my room and went to get something to eat.

I got some food and was pretty excited by the quality, quantity and selection of food. I looked around for the guy I had met earlier but couldn't find him so I sat at a random table.

I was feeling excited and very free as I was no longer in a small country town where everyone knew me and my parents. My first steps into the new world where no one knew me. I sat down to start eating, this girl sitting across from me looked at me and said 'Do your parents have a beach house at ... Very specific location'.

Me. Uh Yes they do.... How do you know. She then introduces herself and then I recognised and remembered her. She was my second cousin. We didn't meet at that many events as her family lived a long way away.

I had now been at University for about one hour. I have already been invited for a night out drinking, made a mate, moved into my first home, had lunch and run into a family member, and it was only 1:30 in the Afternoon and technically University didn't officially start for another four days when O-Week starts on Monday.

I have spoken with some of the students that say they are very lonely and many of them state that they started university in 2020, so got a few weeks of normal campus life and then before they could meet too many people all forced into isolation and online classes. Many of these students have graduated and feel that they missed out on the university experience, which I can understand.

I am sure that in my day, there was some lonely students that didn't meet people or find their friend group, but it would have been a much smaller percentage that it was now. Some of my first year classes only had about 100 people in them, so it would have been pretty obvious if one third of them didn't have friends.

This social isolation caused by so many online classes, definitely seems to be having an impact on the mental health of the more introverted. We need to look for long term solutions to this problem, what this solution is - I am not sure. There will always be some lonely people in a society, but when it is approaching 33% that is when we need to do something.

Stephen Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02611276859419533222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5496351795498340599.post-70910625009019142422020-12-20T00:42:00.003+10:002020-12-20T00:42:41.421+10:00to the Edge of Space and Beyond
Edge Space Research Interest.

I have never explained the name behind the blog, so I thought that I would now.

I would like before I die to get an Object to the Edge of Space.

So far the highest rocket I have launched reached about 4,000 feet, as part of my rocketry level 1 certification, so I have a fair way to go.

Stephen Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02611276859419533222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5496351795498340599.post-62047752012469236522015-11-25T12:05:00.001+10:002015-11-25T12:06:33.324+10:00Blue origin made it to the Edge of Space today Congratulations Blue Origin, on making it to the edge of space and returning to earth, in a controlled manner.

The Edge of Space is an arbitrary number, that has been classified as 100 kilometers high, Blue origins ship New Shepard reached a height of 100.5 km.

The really interesting part of the video for me starts at around 1:52 where you can see the gimbals on the rocket, trying to stableize the trajectory and slow the rocket down,

This is different from what SpaceX is trying to do, they are going about twice as high, with a rocket that is designed to put satellites into orbit, so its longer and thinner, it travels at about twice the speed. But it is still an impressive feat that Blue origin did today.

After 20 years in Brisbane, we have decided to move North, on our Northern adventure, most likely to Cairns. We spent several months in Cairns as part of our honeymoon and fell in love with the place and finally we have decided that now is the time to move there. We are not sure what part of Cairns, or if we will settle in Cairns. We are thinking about moving to a small acreage or something with a bit of space, so that I can continue to fly drones and solar balloons close to home.

We will be simplifying our lifestyle, as I am considering undertaking my PhD, which is a big step, so we will see what happens. I will still be working during this time as well.

We are selling our lovely house where we have had many good times, and many friends have been around for visits, we will miss our fantastic neighbors, and having such a nice large park behind us, but being on acreage should give us that familiar feeling of space that we are used to here.

Brisbane CBD.

If you are interested in attending click here and sign up I hope to see many people there for the day.

I will be there, with a friend of mine Ash and we will be talking Drones, Quad-Copters, Octo-copters and how Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) can be used to integrate with GIS and other systems. If you are just curious about what drones can do or how they work come and say Hi and have a look and touch a few. We will have several different types and level of drones from hobby level to professional level, such as this Octo-Copter.
To me, there is no question that we must leave this Earth and explore. It is in our nature to wander what is around the next corner or over the next hill, we have been to all parts of this world and the time is now, to move on.

"Space is not the final frontier - it is our next frontier"

I think the idea of building a ship based around the most well know Starship, the Enterprise is a great idea, it is what piqued my interest into reading more about it at http://www.buildtheenterprise.org/. I was expecting it to be a vague idea, but the person has put a fair bit of thought and research into this proposal. BTE Dan, is not suggesting that we build it right now, what he is suggesting that a feasibility study be undertaken to determine if it is indeed possible, with the current levels of technology that we have available to us today.

At first I thought the idea of basing a modern star ship on TV series from 1966 was stupid, and then I realized that the reason I was reading the article was because of the name Enterprise and the association with Star Trek. I then realized that the man on the street isn't interested in thrust from rocket engines, or toilet systems of space ships, they need an idea that they can get behind, this may be that idea.

The American government over 40 years ago, with what could now be considered primitive computer power was able to launch a vehicle from earth, land on the moon and return safely, considering how far we have come with computing power and other technologies, we are ready to begin on a ship of this scale, it won't be easy, but nothing great comes easy.

I know this ship will never be built, or at least not that I will ever see. But I am excited by what is happening in the civilian space industry, and am hopeful that the idea of the Build the Enterprise will start more discussion and will get us one step closer to moving into space.
Backed by Billionaire Richard Branson. The first commercial space flight is expected to start this year, the first passengers will be Richard, and two of his children. Each trip will cost about USD $200,000 or you can buy all 5 available seats and take your mates for a million dollars.

This will be the first space tourism company and currently has over 500 people paid up and booked ready to go to space. Interestingly this craft will not be approved to fly by the government and passengers will fly under informed consent, basically this means they sign a bit of paper that says this is a risky venture and I understand the risk, and that I am still willing to take this risk. This will not be like flying in an aircraft.
This is the commercial aspect of space travel, moving large loads of commercial equipment and supplies from the Earth to close orbit, similar to the private railways in America over one hundred years ago. Most (maybe all) of the SPACE X rockets are unmanned.
Non profit, open source private space company run by Kristian vonBengtson to demonstrate that it can be done without the massive costs of other companies. This company is funded by donations from people like you and I.

I am probably most excited by this group as its open source, being done on a very limited budget of probably a few million where as the other two have budgets of Billions of dollars. I think any radical new space technologies are likely to come from here rather then the evolutionary nature of the other two, as they have the budgets to do things they way they are known of no, rather than having to come up with radical new break through solutions.Stephen Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02611276859419533222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5496351795498340599.post-40920699219350339622013-01-22T17:30:00.000+10:002013-01-25T08:51:25.198+10:00International Space Station over Australia and New Zealand

There are many good viewing opportunities of the International Space Station this week for people in Australia and New Zealand. Below is a list of links that take you to the end of this article where there is a list of several major cities in Australia and New Zealand listing times and where to look in the sky to see the Space station.

Since my first Space Station post many people have asked me how can they work out when they can see it for their location, there are several ways to do this I have listed a few here

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/ This is a NASA site that lets you see when the ISS and other satellites are flying overhead, you can enter GPS coordinates or your city name, and this site will show you when the next several over passes are happening. This site also will show you when about 400 other satellites are passing over head as well.

http://spotthestation.nasa.gov/ This is an email alert service from NASA and will email you for your location whenever the ISS is going to over pass your area.

There are many small apps that you can get for iOS, Android, Windows and many other phones / tablets that will show you what is in the sky above you. Many of these will also include alarms that will warn you as the ISS or other satellites are about to pass.

Stare at the sky, until you see the third brightest object move overhead ;) although this sounds silly, its not really, this was meant to encourage people to look up at the stars. If you do it often enough you will eventually notice the ISS.

For the last few weeks I have been following Chris Hadfield on Google+ and his amazing photos that he takes from the space station, and the geek in me thought it was pretty cool to watch a twitter conversation between Captain Kirk and Chris Hadfield.

Take a walk outside, look up at the stars, wonder what is out there, show the kids and explain to them that there are 6 men living up there inside a Space Station, a space station that is a combined effort of many planets of Earth. Hopefully this will encourage them to become curious and want to learn more about the stars, space and what can be done out there.
Australian and New Zealand cities with times when you can see the ISS overhead.

Instructions

It is very easy to see the ISS with your naked eye. Basically look for your nearest location, anything within 100
or 200 km you can use, look for the date and time and as you move across the columns,
the next one shows you for how long you should be able to see the ISS, the next
column shows you how high in the sky it will be, 0' is the horizon, and 90' is
directly overhead the approach is from which direction it will approach from,
and departure is from where you will lose sight of it. The degrees before
approach and departure tell you how far above the horizon it should be visible
for, I basically ignore these.

Here is how I find the ISS in the sky: walk to the local
park, so that I have a lower horizon, look in the direction that I am expecting
it to come from if we use Brisbane Jan 22 as an example, I would be looking
roughly South South East (SSE) and draw a line in my head of where it will
disappear and keep watching that line and then it’s pretty easy to notice a
bright moving object going across the sky.

If there is obscured sky, I work out how far through the arc
it would be and look there for the Brisbane example, since it is only 2 minutes
- after I minute I would be looking along the expected line of travel about 1/2
way along that line.

After a 17 year break from formal University Study, I have decided to return to university and undertake a second Master degree. My first Master degree was in Geographic Information Systems (MGIS), this one will be a Master Business Administration (MBA) from Southern Cross University.

I have been thinking for a while about doing some more study for the last several years, and was thinking about either a PhD in Aerospace or a MBA in marketing, and have decided for a few reasons on doing the MBA at this time. For the last several years, it has become evident to me, that marketing is something that I need more knowledge and expertise about. A friend of mine, the one who flew the 737 Simulator is also enrolled in this course at this time, and I thought the opportunity to study with some one I knew would make it more fun and easier, as I will have someone to discuss the topics with.

This will be an interesting experience as when I last studied (1995), the Internet was just starting to take off and the earliest forms of Yahoo, where around and could just be used, whereas now they are a large part of education. The second interesting aspect of this for me will be how it is taught, I have always been interested in online education since I completed my first Master thesis on that subject, and have worked as a researcher for some institutions researching online education. The course I am doing is offered offline, rather than online which slightly disappointing

I am excited but also slightly nervous about starting education again, as I was never a big fan of exams or exam conditions, although the more I work, the more I realize how often I am actually in exam conditions, such as when in meetings with clients, they do not want to see me looking up an answer to a question, they expect me to know the answer.

The last time I applied to university, I needed to physically show up on campus, meet an academic and agree an area of study, complete paperwork and wait, this time I completed a fairly detailed online form in the morning and by lunch time I had my acceptance and was able to start reading up on the course. Within 48 hours of my mate mentioning that he was doing this MBA, I was enrolled and starting to study for it

Where I can I will be attempting to use my internal projects for projects and assignments, so that I can begin to see improvements and the changes to my projects as I complete this study. This will also meant that I am familiar with the 'current data' and do not have to spend time trying to find companies / projects to do assignments on.
There is 12 subjects that I must complete, 6 of which are compulsory and I can choose another 6 from a list of about 50 other subjects, presuming that all subjects are the same structure as the 6 compulsory ones, which is

10 sections

2 assignments

1 exam

This means that I will need to complete 120 sections (which will take about 10 or 15 hours each section), 24 assignments and 12 exams. Having had a quick look at my 6 electives options, there are some that are purely project based, so I will be able to reduce the number of exams that I have to do, which is my preferred option.

Each subject is meant to be about 150 hours of work, all up a total of 1800 hours of expected work to complete this masters. Which reduces down to 45 weeks of 40 hour weeks.

There are three trimesters a year, which is my preferred choice of study, there is no reason, that I need a 4 month break from study over the Summer period.

Provided material.

At the moment I am undertaking two subjects namely

MKT00720 - Marketing Management.

MNG00720 - Foundations of Management

so I have been sent the material for these two subjects. Which arrives by mail as one parcel containing everything that is needed for each subject. The structure so far appears to be

Text Book (the information)

Study Guide 1 (the Study Guide)

Study Guide 2 (readings)

CD -

There was some small errors and inconsistencies between the website, packing list and what actually arrived, nothing major was wrong just small errors, such as the website has the text book listed as the Australian edition, but I was sent the Global edition, small issues like that - that make you do a double take and check that you have the right source material.

What I have read of the study guide and textbook so far look well laid out and easy to read and seem to make sense, I have nearly completed my first weeks work for the marketing subject.

WHY ?

There has been several questions lately on the GIS & Technological Innovation Forum and GIS on linkedin in the last few weeks with people asking if they should undertake their master degree in GIS, and to me its a more generic question should people undertake more study.

I have always been an advocate of education, whether formal or informal, and consider life long learning a core part of what I am and what I do, and is necessary for me to do my work. I feel that i have benefited greatly from having had a Master degree in the past sometimes in informal ways and sometimes as a requirement to 'getting the job'.

The style of work that you do and are expected to do after having a master degree I have found in my personal experience to be a better 'quality' of work and more interesting projects, I have also noticed that by having a master degree, more trust or respect is given to you when you start at a new organisation or with a new client. I have tended to do a fair bit of R&D style work, and having a master degree has made it possible for me to work in those areas.

I see this second master degree as rounding off my original education, rather than it taking me down a different path to the path I am on now.
Why do I have 6 monitors on my desk ?

The short answer is to make me more efficient, and the WOW factor when people / clients walk into my office. Nearly everyone that has been here remembers seeing my desk and monitors ;), I will run into people and they will not recognize me, or my name, but once I start talking about what I do, they will often remark, I remember you now, they guy with all those monitors.

It was originally set up to show clients that our water management software, Jobs2Crews was able to scale to a large multiple monitor setup, and is still often used for this scenario.

I have a good stand up desk, that has many levels, which allows me to have monitors on multiple different levels, I have four different swing arms of which three are attached to my desk at the moment, allowing me many combinations of monitors. This post is a discussion of varying setup and what I have found has worked for me

For the last four or so years, I have had my current monitor setup and a fairly used to it now, there are basically four configurations that I use, namely

Dual landscape 24" monitors - normal every day use, used with every scenario. This uses the least amount of power, generates the least amount of heat, which can be a factor in a Queensland summer. One problem with this layout is that the mouse can disappear into the top three monitors, which are still connected, but are just powered down. I am very used to this happening and know if I lose the mouse to move it down and it will reappear, it is interesting watching first time users of my setup lose the mouse often when in this mode ;)

Dual landscape 24" monitors, 1 portrait landscape 24" monitors normal use, monitoring a few other processes. I rarely use this setup.

Dual landscape 24" monitors, 3 portrait landscape 24" monitors usually used for demonstrating mapping software. This is Demo mode or impress the clients mode. This would be my second most used option. Unfortunately this configuration does not play movies well I have tried but its more annoying and just better to watch it one either the TV, the projector or just on one of the 24" monitors.

Dual landscape 24" monitors, 3 portrait landscape 24" monitors, 1 19" monitor rarely used. This Layout is only really used if we are doing demonstrations of Australian maps, as the very western point of Western Australia sticks out into the 19" monitor.

At the moment I only have 4 of my monitors connected as I have not had the time to replace a broken video card, but will do soon. I have 5 Dell 24" monitors 2 at eye level in landscape mode and three above that in portrait mode. There is a sixth monitor on a swing arm to the left.

The top three monitors are slightly tilted horizontally relative to the bottom three so that the cursor lines up better when I go from the top to the bottom or go back to the top.

I have tried various combinations and find that this current setup is best for me, and my work style and what I do. Others may find that different setups work better for them.

I have tried just using two of the 24" monitors in landscape mode and two 19" monitors on swing arm either sides that were swung in so that they were about 65' to my left and right, but I found this very awkward to use and felt very claustrophobic to use. I originally thought that this would be a very good setup where I was 'surrounded' by monitors but it just didn't work for me, and I have not seen many people that have set up multiple monitors this way.

I can not physically reach or really read the information easily at the very top of the top three monitors, the top of these monitors would be about 8 foot high, which is higher than the ceiling height in modern average homes in Australia, luckily my home has 12 foot ceilings. The top three monitors are generally used for review, so if I am running a process that I have to check on regularly, I can put the window up there, and if I need to interact with that window drag it back down, I often have the weather radar maps there. They area also to show large maps. The reason these monitors are so high, is due to the fact that they are on a stand up desk and I am over 6 foot tall.

Cable Management

Cable management as you can imagine is a bit of a nightmare, and something that you can see from the image that i have not 'managed' very well. All up just for the monitors there is 6 power cords, about 9 video cables, a combination of Digital and Analog, and one RCA plug (where i used to have a DVD player connected as well).

The Dell monitors work very well for this scenario, as I can rotate them 90' and they also have 5 separate inputs, and can do picture in picture. At one stage I also had a second computer hooked up to the bottom two monitors, so that they were one of the alternate inputs and I had a second keyboard on a slide out tray of my desk, but as virtualization and remote desktop management got better, I decided that I didn't need the extra complication of the second computer and removed it.

Drivers and rotation

It can be a nightmare getting the setup working properly again, if there is a problem with a driver or re-installing windows, and I have found the best way is to get two monitors working, and then connect each monitor and configure the layout and rotation until it is correct and then move onto the next.

Software

I run standard Windows 7 and do not run any special tools that i have seen around for multiple monitors - I have tried a fair few of them and found that they did not really benefit me for what I do, but can understand that other people do find them advantageous.

I keep moving my windows task bar between the right of my monitor and the bottom, but generally have it on the right, I find that I prefer this, I think as I can have more windows open and see the titles of the windows a lot easier.

Summary

I have been using multiple monitors, since I discovered that it was possible about ten years ago, and stole the video card and monitor from my wife's computer to set it up that night, and have used them ever since, going from 1 to 2 monitors was the largest benefit, in reality although this setup is 'cool' and does offer some benefits, the increase in benefit is not that much higher than having two monitors. If you don't have multiple monitors, especially if you are a developer or working with graphics or maps - give it a try it will make a big difference to your life.

The other night I was watching the International Space Station (ISS) over passing Brisbane and by using the ISS tracker I realized that as the ISS disappeared over the horizon it was now above New Zealand. This meant that while I was standing on the road outside my house in Suburban Brisbane, I was able to see an object in the air that was currently located over New Zealand.

Usually when i am looking for the ISS to fly over, there has been minimal cloud cover so it has been easy to spot it, but the other night, there was a lot of cloud cover, so I used the tracker to help me align where to look, it was then that I noticed where the ISS was currently which was over Emerald about 650 km North West of where I was now (Brisbane) , and the ISS had been above the horizon for a few minutes already,

I was pretty amazed that it was still that far away and I could see it, as I continued to monitor the ISS as it approached the horizon I was able to see that it passed fairly quickly South of Sydney and was still easily visible. I lost sight of the ISS when it was about 10 degrees above the horizon behind some trees and noticed that it was about to cross the coast of New Zealand which was about 2300 km away.

Path of International Space Station Click for Larger Image.

I estimate from where it disappeared that it would have been visible if I could spot it early, about 10 degrees above the horizon that it would be visible from the middle of the Gulf of Carpentaria (A in the image). Over B, which is where i was located all the way to the coast of New Zealand (C in the image ) a total distance of 4600 km.

The distances it will be visible from will vary depending on the height of the ISS, the orbit decays (gets closer to earth) and then rockets are used to increase the distance from Earth, I do not know when the ISS flew over if it was high, middle or a low height. The time and hence distance it will be visible for will also vary on how close the overpass is, this over pass was at 62 degrees so was a medium length overpass, a 20 degree overpass (Such as the overpass tonight 8th Jan 2013) would be noticeably less distance. If you are not sure why - get a tennis / basket ball and mark a dot where you are and move your finger over the ball as if it was the ISS.

International Space Station Overpass Brisbane 8th January 2013 19:14:00

The International Space Station will be visible over Brisbane and surrounding areas again tonight, it will be a low overpass at only 20 degrees high, so will be pretty hard to see. It will appear at 260 degrees (West) and will disappear at 153 degrees (South). It will start at 19:14:09, it will peak at 19:16:12 at 214 degrees (South West) and disappear at 19:21:02.
At the moment there are six men, who are working and living in an artificial environment 370 km above the earth, travelling at nearly 8 km per second (28,000 km per hour) and tonight as it does every few weeks it will pass over our heads. This is the International Space Station.

At 8:10 pm for about 6 minutes it will be visible, over Brisbane, Queensland as small bright dot crossing over the sky. It will appear from the NW and will disappear to the SE, it will reach a maximum height of 76'. I have been monitoring the ISS for a few months now, and this is the highest and hence longest duration overpass I have seen,

From my experience last time, you won't be able to spot it until it is about 10 or 15 degrees above the horizon and will be pretty easy to spot. It's appears a lot brighter than the background stars and is noticeably moving across the sky. The space station is the third brightest object in the sky after the Sun and the moon.

I will be in Graceville park (with dogs) which is a good location to see it from as it is a large space so the horizon is very low. If anyone wants to come along feel free to come over and say hello.

Here is a link to the NASA site about how to see the Space Station, and you can sign up here http://spotthestation.nasa.gov/ to be notified of when it is flying over your location.

I think that this is something fantastic to show the kids as it may spark their imagination about space, and get them thinking about science. And since it is school holidays they can stay up a bit later if young.
Get a few cheap garbage bags, some sticky tape and some string, fill balloon with air, put in the sun and you have a Solar balloon.

Tetroon shaped Solar Baloon

I was reading up on weather balloons and noticed an article that mentioned Solar Balloons, which I had never heard of before, and decided to see what they were. I read up on them for a few hours spending a fair bit of that time reading about a local Brisbane hot air balloon operator.

I found another site that had a DIY section and it looked pretty straight forward so decided that I would give it a try. My first attempt was with a garbage bag that we had in the cupboard to put rubbish in, this was not a success. This bag was too high quality, so the plastic was not thin, so the bag weighed too much and any lift generated was not able to lift the garbage bag. This garbage bag was now used to for its intended purpose of holding rubbish.

Upon further reading I learnt that the cheaper garbage bags are better for this sort of thing as they are thinner and thus weigh less. This makes them pretty useless as a garbage bag, but great for a Solar Balloon. So I headed to the local Coles and Woolworths and looked for the home brand Garbage bags, we bought 4 different types and they have been summarized in the table below.
The Coles home brand Wheelie bin garbage bags were the best bags, and cost about AUD $1 for a pack of four of them from Coles.

HOW DOES IT WORK ?

Basically we are looking for the greatest volume to weight ratio, as that means that there is a lot of air inside the balloon to be warmed up, with the least weight for the balloon to lift.

How a solar balloon works is the black plastic absorbs the energy from sunlight which will heat the air inside which reduces the density of the air, making it lighter than the surrounding air which creates lift so the balloon will rise. This is similar in concept to a hot air balloon, just that a hot air balloon, the energy is provided by a gas burner, rather than from the sun.

These balloons work better with cold or cool air and bright direct sun, so that there is a greater difference between the heated air inside the balloon and the external 'cooler' air. I have tried them both in Summer and Winter and was able to get it working under hot and cold temperatures. The balloons fly best in the morning when there is less wind and when the air has not had much time to warm up, I have tried a few times in the afternoon and never been able to get the balloon aloft. It will take about 15 minutes for the air to warm up inside the balloon. Direct sunlight works much better than cloudy or indirect sunlight.
This morning, when I tested it in the park, the air temperature was about 27'C when I put the thermometer on black plastic the temperature was about 38'C which is an 11'C difference in temperature.

The black plastic was 11'C higher in temperature than the surrounding air.

There is not a very large amount of lift produced but their is sufficient for the balloon to rise fairly rapidly into the air. If you build a large enough balloon it can create enough lift to lift a human. Due to their low lift capacity and large surface area these solar balloons are very prone to being blown around by the wind, when flying one of these balloons you need to have a fairly windless day and walk with the balloon following the wind so that you can stay underneath the balloon, to achieve maximum height. If you stand still and let the balloon drift on a tether the wind will blow the balloon down to the ground as the maximum length of the tether is reached.

I always fly the balloon with an attached tether as it is illegal to fly something over 400 foot high without prior CASA approval, and where I fly these balloons is under the flight path from a small aircraft and helicopter airport. I use a kite string for the tether, which works well. You can see in the following video that the string is 'flicking' this is as it is unwinding from the kite holder

BUILD ONE YOURSELF

This is something that is very easy to build, something that you can build with your kids and is very cheap to test, it just needs some string, some sticky tape, and some cheap garbage bags. The garbage bags that I use cost me about 25 cents ($AUD) each, so the balloon I flew this morning cost me 75 cents. Something great to keep the kids amused one morning this holidays and teach them about some basic science and aerospace.

I have noticed that people do get rather curious about what I am doing when I have about. 600 liter 4 meter long black tube 60 foot in the air, and will often, come up to me and talk to me about it.

I have heard of people releasing these balloons and achieving heights of 20,000 feet, one day when I get time, I will look into releasing one with telemetry and an altimeter to see how high and how far it goes, but I will need to be nowhere near controlled airspace to be allowed to do this.

There are two shapes that most solar balloons tend to be either a long cylinder, or a tetroon, I recommend starting with the long cylinder shape first as they are the easiest to make and will only take about 30 minutes to put together, the tetroons takes about two hours to make is a fair bit harder to make, but is a more efficient shape (larger volume for the same amount of garbage bags). Try not to use too much sticky tape as that is just added unnecessary weight.

Give it a try with your kids these holidays, an easy fun experiment that will teach them something.
Many people have asked me recently 'Why Aerospace' while there is no simple answer the easiest one is probably why not.

I recently realized that I did not really have a hobby, other than training for a marathon, which is not really a hobby and decided that I would look around for one.

So one day I was watching a documentary that mentioned rocket engines, so being the curious person that I am I decided to research how rocket engines work and spent a few days reading on the current rocket technology and upcoming rocket technology, and from this I found model rockets online and decided that I would be interested in pursuing this further.

ROCKETS

My rocket ready to fire
on launchpad 3.

I then looked around for local rocket clubs and found there was one located close by the QLD Rocketry Society, and decided that I would drop out with +Sunnie Snell for a look and see what this local club was like.

I had read up a lot on model rockets and understood the basic concepts, but wanted to speak to some people who fired rockets regularly. From the moment we arrived we found everyone there to be extremely helpful and ready to help with anything to do with rockets. We watched a few rockets getting launched, which is a real adrenaline rush and I decided that I would join the club.

Wind blowing my rocket off course.

A few days later I dropped in to see Australian Rocketry, and joined the Queensland Rocketry Society club, and bought some rocket equipment ready for my certification flight. And had some more questions about constructing the rocket and how to fire it, all of which was answered happily. I had researched much of this already on the Internet, but wanted it confirmed and clarified.

I also read a lot about rocket technology and the theory of rocket flight, what was very surprising was that many of the articles and papers where. From the 1960's and 1970's, especially about rocket flight. There was one more modern papers on rocket engines, specifically Hybrid engines, which are a relatively new invention.

When the curiosity rover from NASA landed on Mars, I was able to understand a lot better what technology was being used, and how hard it was to get it there, I was also able to answer a lot of questions my friends had about how and why they did different things with the landing of the rover.

ROVERS AND DRONES.

My background is in GIS (Geographic Information Systems - computerized maps), so I have always been interested in drones, in my searching around for rocket information I came across the DIY DRONES site, which promised make a drone as easily as attaching this hardware to a remote control plane, it was a bit more complicated than that, as I didn't have any experience of remote control planes, or even cars for that matter. But in essence once you have the basic remote control knowledge it is plug and play to make a drone.

Due to safety concerns and my lack of remote control flying skills I decided to start with a rover as my first autonomous vehicle. I bought a remote control car from Woolworths as well as two remote controlled helicopters, with the idea that I would automate the car and use the helicopters to begin my flying skills. I came home and pulled the car apart and quickly realized that it looked nothing like any of the pictures I had seen on the Internet of the how remote controlled cars worked, and realized that this would not help me, so this car was relegated to become spare parts. The simple remote control helicopters were used for practice and as a simple step towards flying a fixed wing model.

The irony with remote controls is that the simple 3 channel helicopters are easy to fly and pretty well designed for kids and indoor flying. But once you get to full control remote control helicopters they are much harder to fly than an airplane.

A proper remote car was noticed on special in the local toy world store and was purchased and this was modified to create our first rover. Once we got this rover working we took it to the large park behind us and one of my friends pointed out as we were excitedly congratulating each other in the park, after our first successful mission that to the other people in the park it just looked like we had just driven a remote control car around the park ;).

As we were getting the rover ready for use, I was also trying to teach myself how to fly remote control fixed wing airplanes, I bought an Easy Star II and pretty quickly learnt that it is not that easy to fly one without any experience - as I crashed the plane from about 100 foot into the air and bent the propeller shaft. I then learnt how to repair a propeller shaft :).

Much of what i have learnt, I learnt from doing wrong the first time.

I then decided that the 'experts' where right and I needed to start on a simulator, which is when I downloaded the excellent free R/C desk pilot remote control flight simulator, which allowed me to add my planes into it and learn to fly them on a simulator. I also purchased a much smaller lighter plane that traveled a lot slower and used that to improve my 'real world' flying skills, before I moved back to the larger Easy Star II.

Once we were confident with the APM 2 hardware and software and our setup of remote control, we set an easy star II plane up with all the components and put it up for a test and it all worked pretty well in the first few goes, it is very interesting, and nerve racking - watching a plane fly around the park following a program that you entered for it. You still need to watch the plane closely and be ready with the R/C handset in your hand to revert the plane to manual mode - so that if something goes wrong a human (me) - can take over control of the plane and make sure it is safe.

SAFETY

Since my aerospace interest involves high explosives and high speed propellers I have been very cautious and have been taking things slowly. Any friends that have been helping me get a safety lecture and are trained in correct handling procedure, and any vehicle, engine or device is considered dangerous and appropriate handling procedures have been implemented, my friends thought I was over the top at first, so I found them some images of what can happen when things go wrong, they soon realized that I was being responsible and realistic rather than over reacting and are now more than happy to follow the safe handling procedures.Stephen Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02611276859419533222noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5496351795498340599.post-66021061989896258642012-12-26T18:28:00.004+10:002013-01-17T16:12:40.234+10:00I had an 8 hour 48 minute phone call because of this blog.

Blogs are meant to start conversation, and my first post started one, and this was one long conversation nearly 9 hours.

Last night an old mate of mine John Pritchard (of Techroom) contacted me at about 10:45 PM on Christmas Eve to say that he had heard some common friends talking about my Boeing 737 blog post, and asked me what the URL was, we then typed a few season greetings messages in Skype to each other and then we started a voice chat at 11:00 PM. This Skype call finished at 7:48 AM Boxing day - a total duration of 8 hours 48 minutes and 17 seconds.

I have been on Skype for over 8 years and use it very heavily, and am part of their beta / testing program and have actually had a client for 5 1/2 years that I dealt with mainly through Skype, but my conversation last night was the longest Skype call or phone call that I have ever had in my life. I realize that the length of the call was more to do with the fact that we were both on Christmas break so had the time to chat all night, watch the sun come up and then chat for a few more hours.

I have not been very active blogging in the past but know that I should be doing more and many people have noticed that i have been more active on Social Media for the last two months, and I have spent the previous few months preparing and organizing for starting this blog.

I have had several great friendships that have been formed with people, who I have met by reading their blog. A very good example of that is +David Novakovic who had a blog for his company that was discussing the semantic web. I was doing a project that was very closely related to what he was doing and reached out to him, and arranged for a meeting, when we met we had very similar interests and used his company's service as one of the back end processes for our project. If David had not been blogging, we still may have met up but it may have taken longer or may have never happened. This was about 5 years ago and David and I Are still in pretty regular contact.

I have come to realize that +Duncan Riley is correct Blogging is not a spectator sport, and now understand what he means by that and I have now jumped in with two feet and within days I am already seeing the benefits.Stephen Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02611276859419533222noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5496351795498340599.post-39289071960861503292012-12-23T13:58:00.000+10:002013-01-17T16:09:13.215+10:00I was run over by a Boeing 737 at Flight ExperienceI was fortunate today to be invited by a mate of mine to watch him as he flew a 737 simulator at Flight Experience yesterday afternoon, which happened to be a very cool way to end the work year off.

They start with a discussion with the trainer asking what you want to gain from the experience, and what your flight experience is. My friend was interested in doing a proper flight (taxi - takeoff - circuits - landing), and stated that he has held a commercial light airplane license for about a decade.

Next was a pre-flight briefing video that shows you the basic cockpit controls and talks a bit about the Boeing 737, which is the most popular commercial airliner in the world.

We then walked into the simulator, which is basically a large room, with a projector screen set up in as you can see on the right here. The Simulator has all the switches and dials that a real 737 has and they function as it would in a real 737, so when you adjust the electric trim - the trim wheels spin, the throttle levers moved relative to the power that the autopilot was giving the engines as we adjusted height or bank.

There are 4 seats, the pilot sit on the left, the co-pilot (trainer) sits on the right and there are two seats behind these ones where the passengers sit, which is where I was sitting - behind the pilot - with another friend sitting behind the copilot.

source: http://www.flightexperience.com.au/content/Gallery/_V4B0115(Large).jpg

There is a large curved screen outside which has the scenery projected on to, which was pretty realistic, I was able to recognize it as Brisbane airport.

Once inside the cockpit the pilot and copilot were strapped in - using a 5 point harness as the real planes used, the whole process was done as realistic as possible, a 5 minute run through of all the controls was gone through, this was the most interesting part for me of the whole process, as when you first look at the cockpit it looks like controls and buttons everywhere, but once the logic and grouping of the controls was explained, it made things lot easier. This also helped the back seat passengers be aware of what was happening with the plane. We knew where to see air speed, vertical speed, Angle of attack and so forth.

We began taxing and I was impressed at how realistic the experience was - I have spent a lot of time using flight simulators on computers before - but having this large a screen that totally encompassed your view and having the cockpit layout increased the realism effect.

source:http://www.gate52.com/ybbn.html

Watching my mate taxing this plane, really made me think about and realize how large and heavy these planes really are, there was a noticeable lag between applying engine power and the plane beginning to move, and the same when power was reduced on the engines it made me aware of how hard it is to get 70 tonnes moving.

We were using runway 19 (which means it runs at 190'), we taxied the correct way to the beginning of the runway and then once lined up properly the trainer began explaining in detail the take off procedure, it was while we were sitting here, that i noticed that another Jumbo was lining up for takeoff and was driving right through our plane, the three of us were all IT guys each with over 25 years experience so understood what was happening and commented on it. The trainer was slightly embarrassed and told us to 'ignore that', this did not detract from the realism of the event and to me added a coolness factor, as its not often you get to sit in a realistic 737 cockpit and have a 737 run you over.

We were uninjured from the other 737 running over us and we let that plane clear the runway and my mate applied power and we started to roll down the runway - he did a very good job of keeping it in the center of the runway and once "rotate" was reached we gently climbed into the air. We were soon at 3000 feet and the trainer instructed my friend to start doing gentle turns and talked him through the turns, this is where it became obvious that his experience as a real pilot was advantageous. He was very quickly able to turn a 737 to the exact required heading and too level it out in one smooth operation - where as I tend to do a series of smaller jerkier movements when i am adjusting a plane - whether a real plane, remote control plane or one within a simulator - but i am getting better.

We continued to do some circuits around Brisbane, and occasionally the trainer would pause the simulation which surprisingly did not detract from the realism of the experience for me or the other people with me. When the simulation was paused the trainer would explain things in more detail about the operation that was going to be done next and then we would do that operation.

Once several circuits were done, we were going to do a Touch and Go, which is you land as normal, then instead of applying reverse thrust and brakes, you apply full power and take off once again. From what I understand Touch and Go is a pretty common procedure in pilot training as you get to practice a landing and takeoff.

Once the touch and go was completed we came in for a full landing. and then taxied the plane off the run way and then our time was up.

All up I think this was an amazing experience and was glad that my mate invited me along for the ride, but I think with my limited piloting experience I wouldn't get my moneys worth out of the experience. I am sure that for beginner pilots like me they would have a simpler procedure that they took me through, but then I could do that on my home flight simulator.

Once we walked out - we were all slightly buzzing from the experience as it is a very realistic experience, but soon reality came back and we had to return to work for a few more hours.
